question when you visit Bill's blog!

My Answer

I'm a very eclectic reader, so I have several favorite genres.  However, for quite some time now, I've been very partial to Young Adult Fiction -- specifically fantasy, paranormal romance, and urban fantasy.  In fact, I've been pretty much obsessed with such books!  This is thanks to two of my favorite authors -- Stephenie Meyer and J.K. Rowling.  Since most of you know which books these writers are famous for, I won't mention them yet again.

Here are some of my top favorites in the above-named genres (of course, in addition to the Meyer and Rowling books).  Although the books below are listed in a certain order, this by no means indicates any descending order of preference.  I love them all equally!!

What do you think of my list?
What are some of your favorites?

    1. Hi, Meredith!

Yeah, young adult fiction has become THE genre to read in the last few years! I think we can thank Stephenie Meyer and J.K. Rowling for this. Within the YA genre, paranormal romance and urban fantasy especially have REALLY taken off!

You're very welcome for my recommendations! I'm glad you like these, too!

Happy Book Blogger Hopping to you, too!! :)

  2. Great question for a blog post Maria.

Lately I have been thinking that maybe the YA label is a little too broad to classify as a genre. It seems to encompass several genres including science fiction, fantasy, horror, urban fiction, etc.

    1. Hey, Brian!

Actually, the "young adult fiction" label does indeed encompass several other genres. I think the use of this label came about because this type of fiction can be differentiated from fiction written for adults in two important ways. First, the protagonists are usually people in their late teens. This is, of course, a very appealing time in life for most of us, even though it can also be the most traumatic. Second, YA novels usually lack the vulgar language (such as 'the F bomb') and overly graphic sex scenes that have become a staple of adult fiction. So, the term 'young adult fiction' is an umbrella term, under which fall other categories, as mentioned above.

I have gravitated toward this type of fiction because of the two characteristics I mentioned above. I enjoy ‘reliving’ my high school years, and kind of ‘doing it better’ through YA heroines! I also enjoy reading books without encountering vulgar language every few pages, or having to deal with sex scenes that are almost pornographic.

The YA genre, with all of its sub-genres, has become very successful in recent years, and I think it’s because of the two qualities I’ve mentioned above.

Thanks for commenting!! Have a GREAT weekend!! :)

  8. I have not read these books but they all have gorgeous covers. I do find myself reading more YA books because of reviews that I need to post and because of the covers, but I can't stand reading them for too long. The immaturity/drama of the characters/situations of teen life really gets to me after a while. When this happens, I'm so glad to fall back on other great adult genres.
